Nicola Payne, Nurse

Care Home Specialist Nurse at NEMS CBS Ltd.

“I love my job!” Nicola said.  “I set out each day to make a difference!”

Throughout secondary school, Nicola wanted to be a Nurse.  However, after leaving at 16, she worked in the financial industry until the credit crush in 2007 and she was made redundant.  Already eight months pregnant, she decided it was time for a change and, three months after her son was born, Nicola started work at a domiciliary care company.

While there, Nicola started her NVQ 3 in health and social care.  She also received all the encouragement she needed to continue studying from her manager.  Nicola started to train as a Nurse and, after three years, graduated with a first class honours degree!

Her first job after qualifying was as a Staff Nurse in the community, where she started to look at new ways of working and how best to support care homes.  Having found her passion for service improvement at university, this was perfect for Nicola!  Piloting a project to provide support and training a care home, Nicola then prepared a business case for the general managers and proposed a new role: a Senior Staff Nurse.  Fortunately, they could see the potential and Nicola become a Senior Staff Nurse after a successful interview.

Eventually, Nicola returned to her old university to study a MSc in Advanced Nursing and then interviewed for a position as of a Care Home Specialist Nurse, which she is still doing now.

Nicola’s role is varied and keeps her busy.  “I enjoy meeting lots of new people and no two days are ever the same,” she said.  Here’s what Nicola’s typical day consists of:

  • Delivering training to care home staff
  • Discussing with care home staff where further support is required
  • Supporting new innovations in the practice
  • Shadowing in a GP surgery
  • Chairing a community of practice for health and social care workers who work in or with care homes.

When asked what advice she would give to someone who wants to do a similar job, Nicola said: “Keep going!  Embrace change!  Surround yourself with positive people and believe in yourself!”

A huge thank you to Nicola for sharing her experience with us and showing us how varied a Nursing role can be.
