Ozma Ashiq works as a Senior Sister of Cardiology at Frimley Health NHS Trust.
After starting a degree in something that had nothing to do with healthcare, Ozma decided to change her career path when she got a job as a Healthcare Assistant. Since then, she has been doing some amazing work in cardiology departments of the NHS.
Can you give some examples of what you do in a typical day or week?
- Emergency treatment for heart attack patients
- Assistant with pacemaker insertions
- Cardiac clinics
- Cardioversions to restore normal heart rhythm
- Admit and help patients to recover following cardiac procedures.
What do you enjoy most and least about your work?
I enjoy all aspects of seeing the patients getting better and walking out of the hospital.
The on-calls are what I least enjoy, but I also release their importance.
How did you get into your current career?
I was going an unrelated degree and then work as a Healthcare Assistant for a short period. I enjoyed is so much that I progressed into nursing.
What would you tell someone thinking of a career like yours?
It’s a great job and extremely fulfilling with fantastic career progression and opportunities.
What are your future career plans?
To continue in my role and move into a more specialised role.
