What did you want to be when you grew up and why?
A professional sportsman. Opportunities were limited in those days and the only pathways were either academic or sporting.
What inspired you to volunteer with Inspiring the Future?
It’s important for young children to know that there are many more career opportunities available, many of which they will probably be aware of until they attend an Inspiring the Future event. Also, they can ask questions about these new opportunities from people who are doing the work on a daily basis. Even if just one child suddenly realises that “That’s the job I always wanted to do, but never knew it”, then this is all worthwhile.
What events have you taken part in?
Career speed networking, open days, work experience, and ‘What’s My Line?’ assemblies.
What has been the best part about volunteering?
Sparking an interest in the children and being on the receiving end of their enthusiasm.
What has been the strangest/funniest/best question you’ve been asked?
“Is what you do like it is on TV?”
Has volunteering with Inspiring the Future been a positive experience? If so, why?
Very much a positive experiences. As long as I can tell children about what’s out there for them as a potential career/avenue to explore, then that will surely help them make more informed decisions later on about their futures.
What would you say to over people thinking of volunteering with Inspiring the Future?
Well worth it. That “light bulb” moment when a child want to ask and learn more about a possible career that they never previously considered, but they think suits their skills and character, is unforgettable.
Please describe Inspiring the Future in five words.
Fun. Worthwhile. Uplifting. Life-changing.
Do you have any other comments that you would like to add?
It’s important that the children be allowed to ask questions about what they have heard and see. Those questions and the answers they receive could be a pivotal moment for them and their future. Years from now, looking back, some may say that it all began with a talk we had from ……
